This is all tied off with a penchant for the darkly theatrical, which reveals itself especially in their rather hyperoperatic live performances. They are well-regarded for their genre-busting hybrid of musical styles, which is characterised by the incorporation of strong elements of classical music, art rock, electronic music, metal, jazz and flamenco, with a defiantly-experimental bent. ![]() That song was written literally at that moment.Muse is an English alternative/ progressive rock band formed in 1994 by vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Christopher Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard. I don't have it very often, but if I did ever have a moment where, late at night, I can't sleep, and all those thoughts start going around, like, 'What's going on? All these natural disasters, all this stuff that's happening, civil unrest, blah, blah, blah.' It puts you into a panic. That song literally sums them all up, I think. But I was really pushing him on the double bass drum stuff.” That is us going, 'Okay, if we're going to go heavy, let's go heavy.' Dom had a different kit for everything, pretty much. Whenever I go loud, that’s where it goes. Well, the 'ugh!', it just came out like a high-pitched falsetto wail. “It's the first death growl ever on a Muse record. It really is a direct expression of that loneliness, and also the tragedy of what was happening for so many people.” This song was in my mind in that world: me on the piano, singing alone. During the pandemic, I did a couple things on my own, just on the piano, acoustic. I was surprised that Dom and Chris even wanted that on the album. I think the democratic structure is amazing in, but as everyone knows, the lobbyists, there’s so much corruption there.” The question is, is there any common ground here that can be found to bring these people together? I think the common ground is that there's a need for systemic change, like in the way politics is done, potentially. “It’s idealistic, but I always try to have some hope that these two schools of thought, which are opposing each other in the US right now, can come together. We just feel like we're a part of this generation where something's going to go down in a major way.” And now we're dealing with real external threats. Something’s going on in the West-a kind of collapse, a kind of division has been emerging. “Our generation has seen this huge change. So we're excited for the future.” Below, Bellamy talks through some of the tracks on Will of the People. “If I had to pick one thing that I'm fighting for, it's can we create a revolution? Can we create change here, where it isn't violent and it doesn't lead to an authoritarian vision? We've still got ideas and things we want to do that we haven't done yet. Frustration abounds, and the band has never sounded so large. Now we’re in it, and so are the songs: The Queen-esque “Compliance” takes aim at a culture of bad-faith actors “Liberation” is glam rock against disinformation. “I think in the past, a lot of our stuff's kind of delved into fictional dystopia, like George Orwell.” “It feels a bit closer to reality this time,” Bellamy says. In many ways, it sets the tone for Will of the People, Muse’s ninth full-length and first LP in four years: They needed to sound louder and angrier than ever before, because they’re no longer writing about future anti-utopias-the struggles are here, now. “Because metal, it turns out these metal players are absolute geniuses.” He is, of course, referring to “Kill or Be Killed,” arguably the heaviest track in the English rock band’s 28 years and nine studio albums. “It was nice to actually find something that we weren't good at, and actually try and get really good at it,” Muse singer Matt Bellamy tells Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. ![]()

While winding a watch is a simple process, there are a couple things to be aware of. The mainspring is wound, as the name suggests, by turning the watch’s crown a few dozen times. ![]() A hand-wound watch is the purest form of the mechanical timepiece, which is part of its appeal. That coiled mainspring will only provide power for a day or two (or sometimes longer) if you don’t keep it wound. One of the beautiful things about a mechanical watch is that it requires interaction with its owner to function. The pivots of the gear wheels ride in the center of these rubies, which are polished smooth to provide nearly frictionless surfaces.ĥ0 Terms Every Watch Lover Needs to Know How to Wind and Set a Watch Those red shiny discs you see in the bridges of a watch are rubies, formerly real ones, currently most often synthetic ones. Friction is mitigated by regular lubrication and smooth “jeweled” bearings. But, as you might guess, friction and external shocks are archenemies of the mechanical watch movement. With all of these meshed gears and delicate springs, it’s a wonder these contraptions are as precise as they are (though a well-adjusted chronometer-grade movement can keep time to a 99.999% accuracy). Most modern hairsprings are made up of a metallic alloy that compensates for temperature changes, and some are made from silicon, which is immune to magnetism. The precision of the watch depends largely on the tension of this hairspring, as well as its resistance to temperature changes and magnetism. The hairspring is the heart of the watch if you’ve seen a mechanical watch movement running, you’ll appreciate that metaphor, as the hairspring “beats” back and forth at a steady rate anywhere between 18,000 and 36,000 times per hour. Instead, the power that drives the hands around the dial, and also drives any additional complications like a date function, a moonphase or a chronograph, comes from the unwinding of a tightly coiled flat spring. Unlike a quartz watch, a mechanical timepiece doesn’t get its energy from a battery. The basic architecture of almost every mechanical watch for the past three centuries is the same, proving what a truly ingenious and efficient machine it is. These are the pros of a mechanical watch.īut before you reap the benefits, there are a few things to keep in mind that will help keep that watch running flawlessly until you pass it on your offspring one day. Whether you wear it just for special occasions or it accompanies you during all of life’s significant moments - and whether you paid a week’s salary for it or a year’s - it should serve you well, running trouble-free for many years. That makes you the rightfully proud owner of more than just a timekeeper: that little disc on your wrist is an emblem of the culmination of art and science, a salute to man’s ingenuity. Congratulations, you bought your first mechanical watch. ![]() ![]() In: Proceedings of the 11th Eurographics Conference on Parallel Graphics and Visualization, EGPGV 2011, Goslar, DEU, pp. 18.Whitlock, B., Favre, J.M., Meredith, J.S.: Parallel in situ coupling of simulation with a fully featured visualization system.17.Vacanti, A., Rose, L.: New Data Array Layouts in VTK 7.1 (2016).16.ParaView Developers: ParaView-Superbuild (2020).paraview Sign up for free to join this conversation on GitHub. 15.MPICH Developers: MPICH ABI Compatibility Initiative (2014). use paraview in CentOS Raw centosparaviewinstall.sh /bin/sh su -c yum install -y mesa-libGLU libSM libXrender fontconfig libXt cd wget tar xzf ParaView-3.14. cd ParaView-3.14.1-Linux-64bit/bin.14.Lipsa, D., Geveci, B.: Ghost and blanking (visibility) changes (2015).13.Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: Conduit: Simplified Data Exchange for HPC Simulations - Conduit Blueprint (2019).12.Larsen, M., et al.: The ALPINE in situ infrastructure: ascending from the ashes of strawman, pp.Association for Computing Machinery, New York (2017).
